Kenyan Social Movements Call on IG of Police and CS Security to Resign

We the Grassroots Human Rights Defenders and Social Justice Activists from Bunge la Mwananchi, Coalition for Constitution Implementation Kenya, World March of Women Kenya, Kenyan Peasants League, Alliance Grassroots Human Rights Defenders Kenya, Coalition for Grassroots Human Rights Defenders Kenya, Dandora Must Change Social Movement, Mathare Social Justice Centre, Bunge la Mwananchi Kangemi, Pan-African Grassroots Women Liberation, Grassroots Social Movements Kenya Condemn with strongest possible terms the use of excessive force in dispersing the peaceful procession at IEBC offices at the Anniversary Towers Nairobi and other parts of the country like Kisii, Busia, Machakos and Kisumu and is further calling for immediate Resignation of the IG of police and the CS Security for contravening the Constitution and the Law.

We Condemn the brutal beating and Inflicting injuries to Immanuel Okumu from Katina Ward in Kawangware who was injured in the head and abdomen, Jackline Nawiri from Mathare who broke his forelimb, Simon Ayaya from Mathare who has a bullet lodged on his chest, Japheth Muroko who was Injured in the Head and Leg, Shida Adam from Makina Kibera who was Badly Injured, Rita from University of Nairobi, Domnick Oulu from Huruma and is calling for prosecution of the police officers involved.

We are asking the IG of police to provide a list of all the police officers who were involved in the protests across the country by Friday the 20 May 2016 pursuant to the right to information held by the state to facilitate their prosecution failure to which he shall be personally held responsible and liable for the injuries and harms caused to innocent Kenyans.

To this effect we shall be presenting a petition to the IG of police tomorrow Wednesday the 18 May 2016 asking him to Release the list of all police officers who involved in the operations countrywide to facilitate their prosecution.

We also call on the Independent Police Oversight Authority – IPOA to conduct through investigation and prosecute the officers involved.

We are asking the Government to respect the Constitution and allow Peaceful processions that are enshrined under article 37 of the Constitution as every Kenyan has a right to Peaceably and Unarmed to protest, to picket, to demonstrate and present petitions to those in Authority.

Finally we are asking the government to come out clean on claims that there is a special Squad set up to deal with protests and should that be the case, the said Squad should be disbanded and those involved be prosecuted as per the Law.
